Tascha E. Niles, who has taught at the NYU seminar, told the paper he was arrested on Wednesday and charged with obstruction of justice, a misdemeanor.
He was released from jail on $50,000 bail.
The NYPD did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Niles was a former White House adviser to Trump, who resigned from his position in 2017 after the FBI concluded there was no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Nils also is known for his outspoken criticism of the FBI.
