In America, beer is not a staple commodity.
Yet in 2016, beer sales jumped 40 per cent to $5.8bn, more than doubling in the past year.
There are now almost 50 million beer drinkers in the US, and many are not aware of their dependence on the highly profitable beverage.
There’s also the matter of the big breweries.
They are a major part of the industry, making more than $2.5bn a year in sales.
That’s the biggest annual boost in American beer sales since the early 1990s.
It’s not because of the brew.
According to the US Brewers Association, the vast majority of the beer brewed in America is brewed by small, family-run craft brewers.
Many of them rely on government subsidies to make their products.
And the breweries are doing very well.
What’s behind the surge in sales?
Some people, like John Wertheimer, the founder of the popular brewery in Washington state, are concerned that the industry is becoming too dependent on the federal government.
He says: The government has a vested interest in maintaining a competitive beer market.
If we were to close down the government-subsidised industry, we’d have a lot less beer available.
What do Americans drink?
Here are some interesting numbers from the latest USA Today survey.
American beer drinkers are now spending more on food than any other nation.
According in the survey, in 2016 they spent $2,958 on food and $3,878 on alcohol.
The US was second in terms of spending, with $3.6 billion.
The United States now produces more than one billion barrels of beer annually, with another billion barrels being brewed.
Americans consume more than 12.5 litres of beer a day.
Thats nearly three-quarters of all beer consumed in the United States.
Beer consumption in the USA rose 10 per cent in the last year.
That meant American beer drinkers now spend more than double the amount of money they spent on food in 2015.
Overall, Americans spend an average of $2 per person on beer, according to a survey by the Brewers Association.
One-third of beer consumed comes from imported beer.
According to the Brewers, there are about 60,000 breweries in the world.

There are about 9.6 million breweries in North America.
In terms of breweries in operation in the country, there were 3,000 in the UK, with a further 1,000 around the world and more than 400 in Germany.
A typical American beer drinker drinks about eight litres of pure alcohol a day, while a typical UK beer drinkers drink around four litres.
People in the U.S. are consuming about one litre of pure ethanol per day.
It costs a little more to brew beer than in the Netherlands, but in terms to buy beer in the States, the price difference is negligible.
Most beer sold in the American market is made from malted barley.
In the Netherlands it’s not made from rye, which is used in beer.
In Germany it’s made from wheat, with barley added to the mash to make the beer.
At least half of the US’s brewers are based in the Midwest.
Breweries in America are now operating at capacity.
There have been nearly 50 million cases of brewing beer in 2017.
Over half of beer sold is produced in the state of Washington, which has more than 1.4 million breweries.
More than 60 per cent (4.9 million) of American beer is produced by small and family-owned craft brewers, who are responsible for more than half of sales.
Nearly half of all the craft beer sold globally is brewed in the states of Oregon, California, Washington, Colorado, and Montana.
Around 3.2 million people in the beer industry work in the production of beer.
That represents about 9 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively of the total workforce in the industry.
By 2025, there will be more than 5.6m people working in the brewing industry, more workers than in any other industry.
Almost all beer sold to the public is produced at home, which makes it cheaper to produce.
Many of the beers brewed in Britain, Ireland, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan are sold at restaurants and pubs, where the average price of a pint of beer is just under $3 in the major cities.
